Meal Prep Made Simple: How to Get Started

Between work, family, and busy schedules, finding time to prepare nutritious meals can feel challenging. Meal prepping is a simple strategy that can make healthy eating easier, save time, and reduce the stress of deciding what to eat each day.

Meal prep is the process of planning and preparing some or all of your meals ahead of time. This might mean cooking several meals for the week, preparing ingredients in advance, or simply portioning snacks so they are ready to grab and go. There is no single “right” way to meal prep—choose an approach that fits your schedule and lifestyle.

Start by planning. Before heading to the grocery store, think about how many meals you need for the week. Choose a few balanced meals that include a source of protein, whole grains or other carbohydrates, vegetables or fruit, and a healthy fat. Keep your meals simple at first. You don't need a different recipe for every day of the week.

Make a grocery list. Once you know what you plan to prepare, write down the ingredients you need. Shopping with a list can help you stay organized and reduce unnecessary purchases.

Choose a prep day. Set aside 1–2 hours when you have the most time. Wash and chop produce, cook proteins and grains, portion snacks, and assemble meals. You can also use convenient options, such as frozen vegetables, canned beans, rotisserie chicken, or pre-cut produce, to save time.

Store meals safely. Use clean, airtight containers and refrigerate perishable foods promptly. Labeling containers with dates can also help you keep track of freshness.

Remember, meal prep doesn't have to mean preparing everything at once. Start with just a few meals or ingredients and build from there. With practice, meal prepping can become a simple habit that supports nutritious choices throughout your week.
